A Request for Help to Make an Udderly Important Purchase

In our plan to make Lawajuni (Papa’s House 3) a self-sufficient Home which will allow us the ability to better serve the girls presently living there, and to continue to rescue some of the hundreds more Kamlari in waiting, we have developed a model.

The very first phase of this is particularly exciting, but due to the unbudgeted emergency rescue of some more girls we no longer have the immediate funds available to start. Please consider if you might be able to help with this first step towards an independent and one day thriving Home.

We had planned to purchase two Jersey cows. Our Home is situated on about ten acres of pasture, government land that we have secured the right to use for our work with rescuing Kamlari girls and providing them a home.

The girls in our Home all have been raised around livestock and know exactly how to care for them. We have made an agreement with a dealer of cows to buy two Jerseys. We have a contract with a local dairy to purchase from us all our milk, straight from the cow, and I have a cost estimate for the construction of a very proper cow shed, with manger and urine troughs to house the two cows. A local grinding mill has guaranteed a price for maize, wheat, and rice bran to feed the cows for the next year.

Currently $1.00 = 73 rupees.

Expenditure details are as follows:

  • Feeding rate per cow = 2.5kg per day. Vitamin and mineral supplements included in feed cost.
  • Our fixed cost for feed = 1950rs/month or 23,400rs per year.
  • The cow shed estimate is for 30,000rs.
  • The cows have been agreed upon for 60,000rs for 2.

Income details are as follows:

  • Milk production per Jersey = 4000 liters for one year.
  • Milk consumption per year based on 30 girls = 2880 liters.
  • Remaining milk = 5120 liters.
  • Contract (picked up from us) price 24rs per liter.
  • Total income from milk production for one year = 122,880rs
  • Total cost to build, buy, and feed these two cows = 113,400rs

Not only do our girls receive fresh milk daily, have the responsibility and pride of caring for these two cows, have the satisfaction of running a little business, but we make a profit in the first year, and after 12 months it is all profit which would allow for further investment in live stock or other cottage industries. If you haven’t yet reached for your calculator, 113,400rs = $1553.42.

If you are able to help with this please send your contribution through PayPal on this site. Once we have reached the goal we will inform you through this home page. Photos of the girls tending to the cows, the construction of the cow shed, and the two cows themselves will appear here as soon as the goal is reached and construction begins. We will list the contributors and their contributions with the photos unless you prefer to be anonymous.

As with any donation to Nepal Orphans Home a tax receipt is sent along with a letter of appreciation as soon as we are informed of the donation. This is an exciting and important first step for all of us in many ways. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Michael Hess
